But for someone who loves the movies as much as I do, it's kind of crazy that there's this iconic experience that I haven't had yet, going to the drive-in.
Come join me for a double feature at South Carolina's Monetta Drive-In.
We're at The Big Mo, y'all.
Let's go for it (upbeat music) Y'all, I'm here with Lisa Boaz of The Big Mo.
Lisa, can you tell us a little bit about The Big Mo, and y'all's history out here?
- Sure.
The drive-in originally opened in 1951 as a single screener, it ran more or less continuously until '86.
We found it in '98 and opened it in '99.
Since then, we have added two more screens and switched from film to digital projection.
- Drive-in movies, so iconic.
Why do you think that this tradition has stood the test of time?
- I think that it is just a fun thing for families and groups of people to do together.
People come early, they tailgate, it's a communal experience that you can't really get a lot of other places these days.
- So I'm a first timer, what are some tips and tricks for someone like me to have the best possible drive-in movie experience?
- [Lisa] Come prepared for the weather, this is an outdoor event.
- [Devyn] Yes.
- We can't control the weather, so bring some bug spray, and a lot of people like to make a little bed in the back of their truck or their SUV, so bring some blankets and pillows and get cozy.
Another thing to remember is that it is a double feature, two movies shown back to back.
- All right, well, I guess I'll see you when I come back when the gates open.
- Okay, good, see you then.
- All right, let's go for it.
(upbeat music) All right, here we go, first time at a drive-in.
(upbeat music) (upbeat music) ♪ Main field ♪ (upbeat music) We're here.
(upbeat music) In case many friends show up, you never know.
You can make friends out here at The Big Mo.
(upbeat music) Now, we need our radio.
We have sound, and you know what that means, snack time.
(upbeat music) - [Seller] Hey there.
- Hi, I'm so good, how are you?
- [Seller] Good.
- May I have a small popcorn and a Skittle?
(upbeat music) Hi, oh my gosh, I'm good, how are you?
You're here.
- You're at The Big Mo.
- You're in The Big Mo.
Do you wanna come watch a movie with me?
- Yeah, I would love to.
- Let's go for it.
(upbeat music) Now, I see why the drive-in is such a favorite pass time for so many people.
There's something about being out here in the open air, under the stars that just feels right, this is how a movie should be seen.
So if you're looking for new date night ideas or maybe to start a new family tradition, put The Big Mo on your list.
There's always something new to discover in South Carolina, so just go for it.
